Just south of the Gold Coast is the city of Grafton, NSW, located right in the Clarence River Valley. Settled first by Europeans, Grafton is home to some beautiful historic buildings. It is famous for its jacaranda-lined streets and the Jacaranda Festival that takes place in October/November every year. There are plenty of cheap hotels, inns and bed and breakfasts in Grafton, but last-minute accommodation can be difficult during the Jacaranda Festival, when the city gets packed with visitors from all over Australia and farther afield.
